According to a class action complaint filed on March 17, 2022 in federal court against FCA US LLC, 3.6L, Pentastar V6 engines are defective, because excessive heat develops on one side of the engine, causing premature wear of component parts in the valvetrain. The very high temperatures, allegedly, prevent the oil in the engine from adequately lubricating the component parts, causing the parts to wear out prematurely and fail.

A common component that, according to the complaint, fails due to premature wear caused by the defective engine is the “rocker arms”  Excessive heat caused by the engine defect, allegedly, prevents the rocker arms from being properly lubricated, leading to premature wear and failure. Allegedly, when this occurs, an audible ticking noise (referred to as the “Pentastar Tick”) develops as the rocker arms start to shift out of place.  According to the lawsuit, the premature failure of engine parts, including the rocker arms, can cause cylinder misfires, loss of power, and, if not addressed, total engine failure.
