Unpaid Security Screening Time: What the FedEx Settlement Shows

Are you required to pass through security screening before or after your shift without being paid? Time spent on mandatory workplace procedures may qualify as compensable work time under applicable state law.

FedEx Wage Class Action: $9.5 Million Settlement

In Alfonso v. FedEx Ground Package System, Inc., employees alleged that FedEx violated Connecticut wage law by requiring them to clock out during mandatory security screenings and while walking between screening areas and time clocks. FedEx agreed to a $9.5 million settlement fund covering more than 49,000 class members. The federal court granted final settlement approval on October 28, 2026, including approval of service awards in the amount of $12,500.00 each to the four named plaintiffs.

Could Your Employer Owe You Unpaid Wages?

If your employer requires you to undergo security screenings, wait for required checks, or perform other work-related activities before clocking in or after clocking out, you may be entitled to unpaid wages. Whether this time is compensable depends on the circumstances and applicable state and federal law.
